Riona lives in a world long ago, one where no one can go anywhere alone—especially in the dark. Riona is the exception. Large wolves are always on the hunt. Riona stands as the one exception to the laws of her world. Nothing can harm her—not even the wolves. The death of Riona’s parents motivates her to journey far from home to recover six ancient healing texts. She wants others to have her gift. No wolf, forest, musket, ocean, or mountaintop will keep Riona from saving the people she loves.  

The story’s main conflict is the role of parenthood that Riona must undertake. Journeying with Riona is a five-year-old girl, Asha. Asha has recently lost her own parents. Riona finds her task of recovering the healing texts that much more difficult when Riona must divide her attention between the little girl and the mysterious traps that have been set for her.
