THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A GREAT DISCUSSION QUESTION: The beating heart of every class I teach is a great discussion question. I plan every class I teach around three questions and three workshops. I call this approach the "Three-Question Workshop." How this looks in the classroom is opening with a question that piques student interest. On a day that I am covering the thesis, for instance, I may open with a question like: "What's your favorite inspirational quote and why?" After sharing thoughts, we would then move into practice writing thesis statements (workshop). After the first workshop, we would transition to the next question and workshop, and so on. I have found that three questions and three workshops can be adjusted to fit any required time that students must meet (e.g., fifty minutes or more).Â
